Fun facts about the Deer

Deer antlers are the fastest growing tissue in the animal kingdom, growing up to 2.5 cm per day in peak season. Only male deer grow antlers in most species — the reindeer is the sole exception where females also carry them. Deer can detect a human scent from half a mile away and see in near-ultraviolet light, making them effectively see UV-bright clothing. A white-tailed deer can sprint at 48 km/h and leap 3 metres high.

Carving the Deer

The Deer is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
