Fun facts about the Elephant

An elephant's trunk contains over 40,000 muscles and can pick up objects as delicate as a single blade of grass or as heavy as 350 kg. Elephants are among the few animals that recognize themselves in a mirror, placing them in a rare club that includes great apes, dolphins, and magpies. They grieve their dead, sometimes returning to bones of family members years later. A single elephant can consume up to 150 kg of vegetation per day.

Carving the Elephant

The Elephant is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
