Fun facts about the Lion

A lion's roar can be heard up to 8 km away and is used to communicate territory, not hunt. Lions are the only cats that live in social groups called prides, which are structured around related females. Male lions sleep up to 20 hours a day while lionesses do 90% of the hunting. A lion's mane darkens with age and testosterone levels, serving as a signal of health and strength to rivals and mates.

Carving the Lion

The Lion is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
