Fun facts about the Snail

A snail's shell grows with it throughout its entire life, adding new rings of calcium carbonate as the animal enlarges. Snails move on a single muscular foot, secreting mucus to reduce friction — the same slime that lets them crawl upside-down on glass. Some garden snails can sleep for up to three years during drought. The giant African snail is the world's largest land snail, reaching 38 cm in length.

Carving the Snail

The Snail is one of the trickier carvings in the set. Its silhouette has multiple thin appendages and concave areas that require precise knife work to score well.

Save your Peeks — you will likely need at least one. Clear the large background areas first with the gouge, then switch early to the chisel and knife for the fine details. Rushing here leads to over-carving.
